The lack of qualified leadership in rural areas is a major concern for many rural communities and the future growth of these communities. Community awareness is key to the development of a well rounded leader. The Community Education Council of Elk and Cameron Counties, the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce and the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce have partnered to present a 10 month, adult leadership program - Leadership Elk County (LEC). An advisory committee of over thirty people is working on planning and presenting the program. The monthly hands-on sessions will provide participants with an insight into the many aspects of life in Elk County. Sessions will cover local government, Elk County history, communication skills, health and human services, arts and education, economic development, tourism and the environment, and state government. This program was developed with the assistance of a grant from the Stackpole Hall Foundation.
